Strike Digest #2

TODAY: In-person members meeting at 1pm in Market Hall to discuss what our next steps might be in taking further action.

Our bargaining table chair Jacob Debets will be giving updates on the University’s pay offer, the upcoming schedule of bargaining meetings which commence on Monday (4 September), removal of Union posters from buildings, and a dispute that was lodged yesterday over the University’s direction to some staff that they need to still deliver teaching/learning materials disrupted by the strike.

Strike Day #2 Wrap Up

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept”
- Angela Davis

The soft picket lines across the university paint a passionate and devoted picture of solidarity.

MLS members spoke to staff and students walking by, spreading awareness and education on the NTEU claims. Over at the libraries members from Scholarly Services were doing the same, while 757 were up bright and early to catch their colleagues arriving at work, convincing many more to join the strike.

The NTEU community came through to support each other, living our values by prioritising rest, nourishment and self-care activities throughout the day. Librarians read books and knitted together, while others recharged through guided mindfulness exercises and quiet reflection periods in the designated “Rest in Resistance” space.

Members at Parkville were revitalised by hot breakfast and snacks from the Solidarity Kitchen or the delicious baked goods supplied by those participating in the Great NTEU Bake Off, and Southbank enjoyed a vegan BBQ feast for students and staff alike.

Solidarity events were held across the university, from a striking Puppet making workshop, speakers from the Victorian NTEU leadership, MLS rank and file, MULSS students, talks on the Art and Organising Index (index.1856.com.au) and a history of Artists organising, to signs and banner painting for Census date actions.

An impromptu rally in the afternoon energised members across the university, with those from Scholarly Services, 757 and Arts marching together to surprise those from Law with some spontaneous solidarity.

Members heard from comrades about the direct impact that underfunding of our areas has on students. We strike because we don’t have the resources to give students the help and support they deserve.
