Strike Digest #4

TODAY: 12pm Strike Committee Meeting, Arts West, Room 361 / Zoom (join), 2pm Strike Week celebration at The Clyde

Yesterday, we received a letter of solidarity from the Australian Education Union where they congratulate the NTEU and every NTEU member taking action this week at the branch and throughout the campaign. The full letter can be read here.

Strike Day 4 Wrap Up

The momentum continues to build for change as 757 again had workmates joining the strike for the first time.

Staff on strike joined fellow members in showing solidarity at the Stop 1 Census day rally, hearing stories of Safra, Rosie, Eoin, Connor, and Anny and Clare (who were moved to join the strike mid-week!).

The speeches from 757 staff resonated deeply with Scholarly Services members who agreed: “We all love the university, our colleagues, and our students too, so we really understand the difficulty in not being able to do the best for everyone because we’re not properly resourced”.

The message of the rally: we’re too overworked and understaffed to give students the support they need and deserve!

The Solidarity Kitchen kept MLS members well-fed with breakfast burritos and vegan Mexican hot chocolate (shout out to Jordy for her delicious lemon bars) before wrapping up their teach out with a session led by Naarm Law Students on Voice on the referendum. The Law Students Society then hosted them again for a Solidarity Gathering.

Arts members filled their afternoon with a presentation from Elyssia and Genevieve on building unionism in Victorian art galleries, a meeting of the insecure workers network and a drop-in session with NTEU organisers.

It was a busy day post-rally for VCA art School Staff and Stagecraft, some attended lectures by MLS, others set up the choose your own adventure Banh Mi BBQ, Solidarity Soccer, a Bike Workshop hosted by Alby Logan, a session on Organising the White Cube: Unions in Melbourne Galleries and a conversation with the Media Entertainment Arts Alliance.

With the final day of the strike upon us we must acknowledge the incredible courage and sacrifice of all members who have taken action this week. James Baldwin said “Those who say it can’t be done are usually interrupted by others doing it.”

Well, you are doing it.
